Raybearer is a YA fantasy novel set in a West African inspired world. The main character, Tarisai, has a gift of being able to see people's memories when she touches them. Raised by a mysterious and elusive mother, Tarisai is sent to the capital city to compete with the other children for a place on the Crown Prince Council. She is ordered to make Dayo, the future king, love her and then kill him as revenge on her mother's behalf. However, she begins to develop feelings for Dayo and defies her mother's wish. The worldbuilding is excellent, the descriptions are vivid, and the characters are compelling. There are some great twists in the story, making it unpredictable. The book has a satisfying ending, but still leaves room for a sequel. Overall, Raybearer is a solid entry in the YA fantasy genre.
